ArtsNL announces sustaining grants for professional arts organizations
August 14, 2024 (St. John’s, NL) – ArtsNL has invested $1,750,010 in 26 professional arts organizations through the Sustaining Program for Professional Arts Organizations (SPPAO) in 2024. As ArtsNL’s only multi-year funding program, the SPPAO has been supporting administrative and production costs associated with operating professional arts organizations since 2008.
In 2024, the SPPAO was extended to a fifth year as the program underwent a robust review, which is now complete. Next week, professional arts organizations currently funded through SPPAO will have an opportunity to learn more about a new operational funding model through scheduled information sessions. The new program will commence in the winter of 2025.
“The SPPAO has been a crucial source of support for our professional arts organizations over the years,” said Melanie Martin, Executive Director of ArtsNL. “A common message from administrators throughout the review process was that the security of this multi-year funding allowed breathing room and fostered long-term planning but, most importantly, it was unrestricted funding that allowed flexibility when so many other programs don’t.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (now known as ArtsNL) is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; two community representatives (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (non-voting). ArtsNL receives an annual allocation of $5.3 million from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
