Artist of the Year Award
DEFINITION
The Artist of the Year Award recognizes the art or activity of an artist, arts group, or arts organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador. The award comes with a cash prize of $2,500.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
The nominee must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of 12 consecutive months prior to the date of the nomination. “Resident” is defined as someone who maintains a principal place of residence in the province. In the case of groups and organizations, 50% of the membership must qualify under the residency rules.
NOMINATIONS
Members of the arts community and general public can nominate one person, group, or organization. Nominees will be considered only for the category in which they are nominated. Permission from the nominee is mandatory.
Nominations must be submitted via the online nomination form. The submitted nomination form is regarded as a letter of support. Self-nominations are no longer accepted.
ArtsNL will contact nominees to request support materials, which will inform the jury’s discussions. Electronically submitted support material (e.g., PDF; JPG; links to video) must be uploaded by the nominee. (Access to a cloud folder will be supplied to the nominee by ArtsNL.) Nominees must supply a bio and recent headshot to potentially be used in all Arts Awards-related publicity.
VOTING AND SELECTION
The recipient of the Artist of the Year Award is selected by a multidisciplinary jury. If there are no nominees, or if those nominated do not qualify under the specified criteria, no award will be presented that year. There is no limit to the number of times an artist, arts group, or arts organization may be nominated or win the Artist of the Year Award.
The Artist of the Year Award is given posthumously only if the nominee passes away after being selected as the winner.
