Emerging Artist Award
DEFINITION
The Emerging Artist Award recognizes new and undisputed talent. It is awarded to an emerging artist, arts group, or arts organization that has earned significant recognition for their professional artistic practice. The Award comes with a cash prize of $2,500 and a piece of original art.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS
The nominee must be a resident in Newfoundland and Labrador for a minimum of 12 months prior to the date of the nomination. “Resident” is defined as someone who maintains a principal place of residence in the province. In the case of arts groups and arts organizations, 50% of the membership must qualify under the residency rules.
NOMINATIONS
Members of the arts community and general public can nominate one person, group, or organization. Nominees will be considered only for the category in which they are nominated. Permission from the nominee is mandatory.
Nominations must be submitted via the online nomination form.
Deadline: Nominations for 2021 must be received by Monday, January 31, 2022.
The submitted nomination form is regarded as a letter of support. If an artist nominates themself, they must provide a letter of support with their support materials.
ArtsNL will contact nominees to request support materials, which will inform the Council’s discussions. Electronically submitted support material (e.g., PDFs; JPGs; URLs), including letters of support, must be uploaded by the nominee. (Access to a cloud folder will be supplied to the nominee by ArtsNL.) Nominees must supply a bio and recent photo.
VOTING AND SELECTION
The recipient of the Emerging Artist Award is selected by members of Council who vote by secret ballot. In the event of a tie vote, the Chair has a second vote. If there are no nominees, or if those nominated do not qualify under the specified criteria, no award will be presented that year.
The Emerging Artist Award is given posthumously only if the nominee passes away after being selected as the winner.
