Jul 19, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 19, 2023 (St. John’s, NL) – ArtsNL has invested $1,970,010 in 26 professional arts organizations through the Sustaining Program for Professional Arts Organizations (SPPAO). This multi-year funding program supports the administrative and production costs associated with operating professional arts organizations.
The next funding cycle deadline for the SPPAO is February 1, 2024. New applicants must confirm their eligibility with an ArtsNL program officer before applying via the online application system.
“The sustaining program is vital for professional arts organizations. This investment provides them some breathing room and allows for long-term planning,” says Melanie Martin, Executive Director of ArtsNL. “I would like to thank the staff and boards of these organizations for their valuable insight as we paused the funding cycle (i.e., added a Year Four) to work together on a sustaining program review to ensure the program continues to respond to the changing needs of our professional arts organizations.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (now known as ArtsNL) is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; two community representatives (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (non-voting). ArtsNL receives an annual allocation of $5.2 million from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
