RELEASE: Equinor ArtsSmarts Scholarship returns for a tenth year

April 5, 2024 (St. John’s, NL) – Equinor has renewed its partnership with ArtsNL in support of the ArtsSmarts Scholarship for a tenth year.
The $2,500 scholarship was established as part of Equinor’s ongoing commitment to arts and culture development in the province. Administered by ArtsNL, the scholarship is awarded annually to a Newfoundland and Labrador student pursuing a post-secondary education in the arts.
Applications for the scholarship will be accepted from any Newfoundland and Labrador high school student commencing first-year, full-time art studies in a degree or diploma program at a recognized publicly funded Canadian university, college, or post-secondary institution specific to education in the arts in fall 2024.
The application is available now through the ArtsNL website and the deadline is Friday, June 28, 2024 (11:59 p.m. NT). Questions may be forwarded to Melanie Martin, ArtsNL Executive Director, at 709-726-2212 ext. 5 or via email at melanie@artsnl.ca.
Interested applicants must complete the Equinor ArtsSmarts Scholarship application form, outline their civic engagement to date through volunteerism, internships, or past work experience, and provide a letter of reference from one of their past or current arts educators. Applicants are also asked to submit an artist statement describing why they want to become a professional artist, what their academic and artistic goals are, and which artists or works inspire them.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (ArtsNL) is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; two community representatives (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (non-voting). ArtsNL receives an annual allocation of $5.3 million from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
