Sep 13, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 13, 2023 (St. John’s, NL) – ArtsNL is pleased to announce enhancements to the Professional Project Grants Program (PPGP) for the fall 2023 funding cycle, made possible with $2M in additional funding provided by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Year of the Arts initiative.

“Year of the Arts funding allows ArtsNL to invest an additional $520,000 into the fall 2023 cycle of PPGP,” says ArtsNL’s Executive Director, Melanie Martin. “We’ve seen unprecedented funding requests throughout the last 18 months, so being able to provide more funding directly to artists underscores our commitment to the arts community in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

PPGP supports individual professional artists, collaborations of individual professional artists, and professional arts groups across various artistic disciplines, including dance, film, music, multidisciplinary arts, theatre, visual arts, and writing. The program provides essential funding for project costs related to creation, production, administration, travel, professional development, and more.

Key temporary changes for the fall 2023 PPGP funding session include:

Increased Funding Envelope
The total funding envelope for fall 2023 has been increased from $850,000 to $1,370,000.

Increased Grant Amounts

  • New professional artists can receive up to a maximum of $8,000.
  • Established professional artists can receive up to a maximum of $20,000.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (now known as ArtsNL) is a non-profit Crown agency created in 1980 by The Arts Council Act. Its mission is to foster and promote the creation and enjoyment of the arts for the benefit of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Council is governed by a volunteer board of 13 appointed by government, reflecting regional representation of the province. This includes 10 professional artists who provide sectoral representation of the arts community; two community representatives (with an interest in the arts); and one representative of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation (non-voting). ArtsNL receives an annual allocation of $5.2 million from the Province to support a variety of granting programs, program delivery, office administration, and communications. It also seeks support from the public and private sector. It supports the following artistic disciplines: dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, and writing.
